CRV Breeding Programme

CRV’s breeding programme is built for New Zealand farmers, with strong local partnerships and access to global genetics and technology. We have a proud history of firsts, and today we continue to innovate to breed healthier, more efficient cows.

Farmers at the heart of breeding

From contributing elite cow genetics to raising the next generation of bulls, farmers play a vital role in shaping New Zealand’s herd. Here’s how the process works:

CRV’s breeding programme process

  1. Identifying elite animals
CRV works with farmers nationwide to identify cows and calves with the best genetic potential. Using herd data, DNA testing, and industry evaluations, we pinpoint animals with traits that improve both herd health and farm efficiency.
  2. Breeding the next generation
Through breeding contracts, embryo transfer programmes, and other agreements, these elite genetics are used to produce calves with high merit. Farmers are key partners throughout, whether providing donor cows, raising recipient calves, or supplying data.
  3. Calving and genotyping
Calves born through these programmes are DNA tested to confirm their genetic value. This information guides selection decisions, ensuring only the best animals progress.
  4. Selection of bulls and heifers
Heifer calves may re-enter the breeding programme to continue advancing genetic gain. Bull calves that meet strict health and genetic criteria are selected to join CRV’s development programme.
  5. Raising bulls for market
Selected bull calves are raised at CRV’s EU-certified production facility near Cambridge. After rigorous health checks, semen is collected and distributed to farmers across New Zealand, ensuring the genetic gains achieved through the programme benefit herds nationwide.
  6. Validating data
Meanwhile, semen from our yearling bulls are distributed to Info Herd farmers. Resulting heifer calves are genotyped and once they are milking , the phenotypic data (physical attributes such as milk production, and conformation traits) are measured.

A proud history of firsts in New Zealand

CRV was founded in 1969 by a group of farmers as Animal Breeding Services Ltd, initially focusing on beef genetics and importing French Charolais sires crossed with Hereford and Angus cattle. In 1970, the company shifted focus to dairy, operating NZ’s first privately owned licensed AI centre near Cambridge.

Key milestones include:

  • 2000 – Released NZ’s first crossbred sire, Amadeus (J12F4)
  • 2003 – Acquired by CRV Delta, becoming the global grazing genetics supplier
  • 2008 – Introduced NZ-proven sexed semen, another first for the industry
  • 2011 – First to introduce facial eczema tolerant genetics
  • 2016 – First to introduce homozygous polled genetics
